The Out-Cast: Episode 11 - The JAMMA 48th Amusement Machine Show

There's a long story behind this, our "lost episode" of the Out-Cast that we recorded way back in September before TGS. But I'll talk about that in the cast itself. We're joined again by friends of the Out-Cast Kat Bailey (1UP, G4, GamePro, EGM, and Active Time Babble) and Daniel Feit (Wired Game|Life and 1UP). So here it is, a long time coming, but very much worth the wait.

Great episode! It's great to hear from Dan and Kat again, as they really add something to the podcast. I have never been to a modern arcade in America, but on a visit to Korea I saw a surprising popularity in DDR machines. I'ts funny how Korean and Japanese arcade and gaming trends in general are so different.

This episode was awesome and pretty much answered all the questions I had related to Japanese arcades. This Gundam VS. shit sounds AMAZING, I've only seen two series, Mobile Suit: Gundam and Gundam Zeta but it sounds like a LOT of fun.
Here is some related news I figured you guys might find interesting:
GGPO is a netcode developed by one of the creators of www.shoryuken.com. For years now a lot of us fighting game fans have used emulators and GGPO to play with eachother. The beautiful thing about GGPO is it creates an illusion of no lag by using a rollback technology.
Anyways, the fighting game community has been pushing for Capcom to get smart and use GGPO in their new releases, but they have only used in in some Final Fight re-release.
Well Bamco has one-upped Capcom and have decided to utilize GGPO in an upcoming 4 player game called Dragon Ball Zenkai Battle Royale! So if you guys go play this game remember that the network protocol was developed by an American!
Just to get an idea of how good GGPO is, I play competitive fighting games with Japanese friends nearly every night and it's lag free.
I doubt lag is too much of a problem at Japanese Play Centers though considering the centralized network. So as an American I'm a bit sad I'm not seeing GGPO in something like KOF2002:UM, which was recently released and is supposedly 'unplayable' online.

THANKS FOR THE GREAT SHOW!

hey guys i really enjoyed this episode! its pretty awesome to here how the arcade industry is so different there. i just found something really cool on ign and wanted to share it w. u guys. i m sure ur gonna bring it up really soon anyways, but there have been a lot of rumors claiming that the psp 2 will be as powerful as the ps3. this article is really cool! http://gear.ign.com/articles/113/1138871p1.html i just remembered it because i think u ve mentioned bridging console and portable gaming a couple times on the show. if this really bridges the gap, do u think ther is a chance for the japanese industry to grab the american market again? also i was wondering if u guys could do an episode where the main topic is anime and how its changing? thanks a lot! and keep it up!

I'm not going to lie-as a twenty-year-old american who came into gaming from the N64 (didn't get really into anything until PS1/2), if the PSP2 is as powerful as the PS3 and I like the games that are on it, it could end up rising on my priority list. I don't think I'd ever give up gaming on a traditional console with a good tv completely, but if a portable system is capable of HD quality graphics and games, then I'm in. And I'm not really a portable gamer at all right now (I have a PSP but I don't use it very often).

Like Sancheev said, an episode about anime would be kind of cool even if Gwyn is the only one who really watches it. Kyle and Richard could probably still provide cultural context and play devil's advocate for people who know nothing about anime (like me). You could even tie games into it with anime games along with the rest of japanese pop culture (in terms of media). I know it's not hugely gaming related (except maybe the voice actors), but I think it would probably make for good discussion.

I've thought up a question for whenever you guys record the next episode: In your opinions, what are some of the best video game soundtracks you've ever experienced? Personally, I'm extremely fond of the Final Fantasy soundtracks when Uematsu was writing them (NOT after) and I've always loved the music in the Silent Hill games. Those are really the only japanese games I play, so the rest tend to be western games (Dragon Age and Uncharted 2 had decent soundtrack imo). Thanks!

Wow, I think I've exceeded the parentheses limit for a single post!

Listened to this awhile ago but forgot to comment. Excellent episode, once again. As Riley mentioned, I'd also enjoy an anime episode the way he described it, cause I don't anything about an anime but the way Gwyn talks about it intruiges me. Anyways, keep up the good work, looking forward to the next cast.

Good podcast! Kat really summed up Valkyria Chronicles 2's marketing overseas very well, "It never happened". Since its launch in Australia, I've only seen one copy on a shelf and that was at a JB Hi-Fi a long time ago. Sega knows how to drop the ball.

Gundam Seed Destiny was probably one of the worst shows I've ever seen. I've never seen a show literally disintegrate so badly in plot and direction. It was painfully clear the people or person in charge hadn't a clue where to take the series or how to end it. The show had at least 3 review episodes because they were trying to buy time to figure out what the hell to do. I think they would have done better by sticking with the original Zaft crew and just gradually tone down Shinn and make him less of an A-hole.

As far as moe anime is concerned, I’ll just repeat what the Iranian Revolutionary Guards scream whenever they watch anime: DEATH TO MOE!!!!
